The Pond and the fish-pond of Cabras

POSITION: 5,8 km.

DESCRIPTION: The pond of Cabras It’s one of the most important damp area in Sardinia, thanks to its extension and its biodiversity. It’s situated in the northern side of the Oristano’s Gulf and powered by the Riu Sa Praia river and comunicates with the Sardinia’s sea because of natural and artificial canals. Moreover with the damp areas of Mistras, Pauli, Sali and the Sale Porcus pond, it forms one of the biggest european marshy ecosystem and it’s protected by the Ramsar Convention.

Near the pond, is active the Pontis Fish-pond that is the only one extant because of the “canale scolmatore” building, in order to avoid the floods that hit repeatebly Cabras. Thaere is a Consortium that breed mullets and with its roe becomes the unmistakable “Gold of Cabras”,to be more precise the “Bottarga”.
